AR ┃ VR ┃ MR ┃ XR

In the virtual world different formats with different naming conventions appear. The most common and important are AR / VR / MR and XR.

AR ┃Augmented Reality

Augmented reality (AR) refers to a live (direct or indirect) view of the real world, enhanced by computer-generated elements. These added elements, sometimes implemented through QR codes, often contain sensor data or supplementary information about the environment. Immersive audio can sometimes enhance the experience, depending on the nature of the added elements.

The applications of AR are extensive, ranging from virtual training (e-learning) to various societal domains where additional information is beneficial (e.g., public transport schedules, warnings, public safety, weather, health, personal sports performance, etc.). Additionally, more products are being developed to facilitate the projection of supplementary information (e.g., in glasses, contact lenses, etc.).

VR ┃ Virtual Reality

Virtual reality (VR) or artificial reality simulates an environment via computer technology, immersing the user in a synthetic experience through multiple sensory inputs. Most VR environments are both visual and auditory, utilizing specialized stereoscopic headsets and spatial audio.

Immersive audio can significantly enhance the experience of a simulated reality. In practice, VR applications require a VR headset and headphones, which may present practical limitations for some use cases. However, VR is widely employed for virtual training, gaming, virtual concerts, and similar experiences.

MR ┃Mixed Reality

Mixed reality (MR), also known as interreality, represents the fusion of the physical world and a virtual world, facilitated by computer technology. This blending of real and virtual elements can be experienced by individuals or groups, creating an impression of a unified reality.

Immersive audio is recommended to enhance the perception of the artificially generated reality. Currently, many MR applications remain in the experimental phase, but significant advancements and broader adoption are expected in the near future.

XR ┃eXtended Reality

Extended reality (XR) encompasses all its constituent forms, including augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), and mixed reality (MR). In other words, XR serves as an umbrella term that unites these three forms of reality under one concept. Extended reality refers to all real and virtual combined environments and human-machine interactions generated through computer technology and wearable devices.
